Hymn of the Day

Today is the commemoration of St. Joseph, Guardian of Jesus, and there happens to be a verse for this occasion in the hymn, “By All Your Saints in Warfare.” It’s also a great verse for parents to take instruction from!

By all Your saints in warfare,
For all Your saints at rest,
Your holy name, O Jesus,
Forevermore be blest!
For You have won the battle
That they might wear the crown;
And now they shine in glory
Reflected from Your throne.

We sing our thanks for Joseph,
The guardian of our Lord,
Who faithfully taught Jesus
Through craft and deed and word.
Grant wisdom, Lord, and patience
To parents ev’rywhere
Who guide and teach the children
Entrusted to their care. 

Then let us praise the Father
And worship God the Son
And sing to God the Spirit,
Eternal Three in One,
Till all the ransomed number
Fall down before the throne,
Ascribing pow’r and glory

Hymn of the Day

This week had the festivals for both St. Timothy, (on Tuesday), and St. Titus, (today), Pastors and Confessors. They share a verse in the hymn, “By All Your Saints in Warfare,” which is fitting, as the two pastors are often associated with each other.

By all Your saints in warfare,
For all Your saints at rest,
Your holy name, O Jesus,
Forevermore be blest!
For You have won the battle
That they might wear the crown;
And now they shine in glory
Reflected from Your throne.

All praise for faithful pastors,
Who preached and taught Your Word;
For Timothy and Titus,
True servants of their Lord.
Lord, help Your pastors nourish
The souls within their care,
So that Your Church may flourish
And all Your blessings share. 

Then let us praise the Father
And worship God the Son
And sing to God the Spirit,
Eternal Three in One,
Till all the ransomed number
Fall down before the throne,
Ascribing pow’r and glory

It’s time for another verse from this hymn–this time, for the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul:

By all Your saints in warfare,
For all Your saints at rest,
Your holy name, O Jesus,

Praise for the light from heaven
And for the voice of awe;
Praise for the glorious vision
The persecutor saw.
O Lord, for Paul’s conversion,
We bless Your name today;
Come shine within our darkness,
And guide us on our way.

Hymn of the Day–”By All Your Saints in Warfare”

I love the versatility of this hymn…there are 24 separate verses appropriate to different feasts and festivals throughout the church year, (plus one verse for saints and martyrs in general). And while each verse does tell us something about the saint, the real focus of each verse is on Christ’s work through said saint–great hymn-writing! Today’s verse reflects today’s festival–The Confession of St. Peter.

By all Your saints in warfare,
For all Your saints at rest,
Your holy name, O Jesus,
Forevermore be blest!
For You have won the battle
That they might wear the crown;
And now they shine in glory
Reflected from Your throne.

Praise for Your great apostle
So eager and so bold,
Thrice falling, yet repentant,
Thrice charged to feed Your fold.
Lord, make Your pastors faithful
To guard Your flock from harm,
And hold them when they waver
With Your almighty arm.

Then let us praise the Father
And worship God the Son
And sing to God the Spirit,
Eternal Three in One,
Till all the ransomed number
