Gourdaments

The Kemper Center for Home Gardening at the Missouri Botanical Garden is home to a beautiful Christmas tree:

What you might not realize at first glance, is that this tree is decorated with “gourdaments.” These natural decorations are each unique and beautiful, and fit with the theme “All Around the World.” You can vote for your favorite, but it’s hard to pick one!

There are other decorations mixed in, including felt cardinals and mice, origami stars, pinecones, and dried plants:

We even spotted “Henry Shaw” hiding in the branches of the tree!

There are currently many fun Christmas activities at the Botanical Garden…while you’re there, make sure you stop by the Kemper Center and take a look at this tree!

Old Belleville Historical Luminary Walk

On Friday and Saturday nights, one of Belleville’s historic neighborhoods held a luminary walk. Although it was far warmer than I would have liked for such an event, it was still fun to walk the brick streets, tour a few old homes, and see the light of over a thousand candles!

Lucia Morning

We had a very fun Lucia Morning!

Since Bunny is charge of the coffee, she let Ladybug take care of the lussekattes this year. Chickadee enjoyed playing with my American Girl doll.

Ryan says the lussekattes turn out better every year…I don’t know if he’s right, but I know they taste almost as good as they smell…and I love the way they smell!

Happy Santa Lucia Day!

Ready for Lucia Morning

December 13th is one of the days I most look forward to during Advent, because it’s Santa Lucia Day. I may not be Scandinavian, but I still enjoy the celebration, and I enjoy it even more now that my daughters get so excited about it!

We’re ready to commemorate Lucia tomorrow!

Tuba Christmas 2015

Today was one of our family’s favorite quirky Christmas events…Tuba Christmas!

IMG_6737

We were there early enough to see the calm before the tuba storm:

We enjoyed the event even more this year, because our pastor was part of the tuba choir!

You haven’t heard “Carol of the Bells” until you’ve heard it played by tubas!

It’s always nice to see what a large crowd gathers to enjoy the music:

Thanks to some sound-canceling headphones, Moose was able to enjoy it this year, making this our best Tuba Christmas yet!

Charleston Memories

On one of the hottest days of the summer, we spent an uncomfortably sweaty, yet fun, afternoon walking around historic Charleston. Even though Christmas was far from our minds, we stopped in the Charleston City Market to buy an ornament for our Christmas tree to commemorate our visit to the Holy City, and our first ever family vacation:

Now we’re approaching winter in the midwest, with nary a palm tree to be seen, but we have a beautiful memory of them, and our trip, sparkling on our Christmas tree!

Christmas Traditions 2015

Last Sunday was one of the most anticipated days of the year for our family…the day we head west to St. Charles for the Christmas Traditions festival!

As we have for the last few years, we started at Llewelyn’s Pub for lunch:

We then stopped at the Gingerbread Village to see the creations and vote for our favorites (we even got to see the trophy this year!). I loved the Eiffel Tower, because it was both timely and beautiful.

We then saw the parade for only the second time ever…and this year, we even saw the whole thing!

I especially seeing all of the flags of the world:

Another first for us was seeing the cast skit, in the form of a game show. It was just as hilarious as you would expect!

The main attraction is getting as many character cards as possible. We did pretty well this year, finding all but nine of the 42 characters!

My favorite is always the Master of Revels, so I was very glad we got to see him, and hear him give out all the wrong holiday greetings (Happy Arbor Day in November?!?):

Another family favorite is Jack Frost…he always makes us laugh!

And even though I’m normally anti-Santa, I really love the Frontier Santa, because he’s exactly how I pictured the character when reading Little House on the Prairie as a child:

It’s always fun to see all of the decorations as you walk up and down Main Street:

We even saw a few humorous signs!

As always, I’m a little sad that it’s over for us already…but we always have next year to look forward to. One of these days, we may even collect every single card!
