What We’re Reading–Summer 2011

I thought I’d share some of the things our family has read so far this summer, or is currently reading, or will read soon, either on our own, or together.

Ryan and I have some books we’ve been working on, too:

As you can see, our interests are very diverse. In short, there’s just not much we don’t read!

  1. Thanks for posting this. I’m one of Ryan’s coworkers, and we were discussing children’s reading this week (I have a seven-year-old daughter). I was thrilled to see the Greek Myths book on your list; we have that one, and I think it’s really fantastic. My daughter also loves the American Girl series, has recently been reading some of the Boxcar books, and has enjoyed Dr. Doolittle too. She loves Beverly Cleary as well. There are several things on the list I’m not familiar with and will have to check out. A series my daughter has really loved over the past year has been the Sisters Grimm books (Michael Buckley). They’re not what I’d call great kid’s literature, but they’re a fun set of stories incorporating lots of old fairy tales into a sort of adventure/detective story. It doesn’t hurt that one of the girls in the story is just my daughter’s age. I’ve just downloaded some Anne of Green Gables books to the Kindle (free from gutenberg.org). She’s also enjoyed a series called “A-Z Mysteries,” but they’re pretty light-weight, so I’m trying to steer her toward things she’ll find more challenging (hence the Grimm books, which are within her reach but a bit more of a challenge). Oh, and then there’re always the Bobbsey Twins! Sorry, I’m running on and on now because I’m really enthusiastic about my kid’s reading. 🙂 Anyway, thanks for publishing the list.

  2. Thanks for reminding me about Anne of Green Gables–that’s been on my list for awhile, but it kept getting put on the back burner.

Wait until you see our list for the new school year–it’s so long, it took me two nights to type the whole thing up!

We love reading, too–can you tell? 😉
