I’m not going to lie…I didn’t feel like writing a weekly wrap-up last week. February blahs or whatever. So I’m doing a two-week wrap-up this week, and we’ll just see what all I can remember!
Our studies in One God, Many Gods have moved from the Indian/eastern religions of Hinduism and Buddhism to far eastern religions such as Shinto and Confucianism. We have also begun to study some cults…the end of the book is in sight!
Ladybug has been working with fractions in math. Finding common denominators, reducing fractions, changing mixed numbers to improper fractions and vice-vera. That’s a lot of fractions. Fortunately, she hasn’t struggled with them, although I occasionally have to remind her to look at her answers and make sure she’s really reduced them all the way. Turkey and Bunny have continued to work with quadratic equations, the quadratic formula, and finding roots in various ways with equations of varying complexity. They have also continued to graph said equations. We don’t have a white board, so I have resorted to using a big piece of poster board when we need to work through a particularly complicated problem together…now I need a nap!
History has been intense and complicated. We have only touched the beginning of WWII, and we’ve already studied Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, and General Franco. We also learned a bit about Neville Chamberlin and his “Peace in our time” speech, and Churchill’s opposition to his way of thinking. It continues to amaze me that the same kinds of things were happening in so many European countries at the same time, and yet they didn’t really see WWII coming. It makes you wonder what kinds of things people will look back on as obvious warning signs of our time, that we didn’t catch! We are even starting to learn a bit about people who are still alive today, such as the former king of Spain, Juan Carlos.
Turkey and Bunny just finished up another chapter on weather in science. They learned about different kinds of storms, how they’re formed, and how they’re categorized. Ladybug has moved on to mollusks…she’s already learned about clams, oysters, mussels, scallops, and sea snails. The more I read about them, the less delicious they all sound!
Ladybug is also continuing to read about Greek myths in literature. We are constantly trying to keep up with the family tree of all the Greek gods…it’s more complicated than trying to untangle the family relationships of the royal houses of Europe! Turkey and Bunny have started the final section of Treasure Island, and we’re still anxiously waiting for the resolution to the story!
Thankfully, March begins next week. Hopefully that will be enough to help me shake off the remaining blahs, and really get motivated for the last 10 weeks or so of the school year!
