Things that Go Bump in the Night!

Last night, around 2 a.m., we were awakened by a *very* loud noise from the direction of the roof. It sounded like something crashing on it, then rolling off. After middle-of-the-night surveillance with a flashlight, and a daytime check of the roof (and the ground surrounding the house) revealed nothing out of the ordinary, we are left slightly puzzled as to what could have caused that big of a noise, without leaving any evidence behind. We did, however, come up with a lot of entertaining theories as to what it could have been!

  • Ninjas–no need to guess whose idea this was–it sure wasn’t me!
  • Angels–also not my guess, but made me laugh out loud in the middle of the night.
  • Ice on the roof shifting-probably the most likely culprit, but still no evidence of anything having moved.
  • The antenna in the crawl space–As we’re cable-less (again!), we rely on an antenna to provide us with local TV. We considered that somehow it may have fallen over, but a quick check of the TV stations showed that our service had not been interrupted, so the antenna seems to be fine.
  • The eaves/gutters–when I first heard it, I was sure that due to ice, the gutter had somehow pulled away from the house and fallen. It didn’t, though.
  • An animal?–There was no way for this guess to really make sense, but it had to be at least mentioned.
  • A meteorite–this is my favorite theory, and by far the most interesting. I tried really hard to find evidence that this is actually what had happened, partly because I really wanted to tell that story, and partly because Turkey would have been beside himself. But aside from the fact that there is no meteorite anywhere around here, the roof also didn’t burst into flames, which, I have to admit, is a good thing!

Any other options that we may have overlooked? We came up with some fun ideas, but not too many that are plausible explanations for the magnitude of sound we heard!

I guess we’ll never know for sure–I’m just hoping that no roof damage makes itself evident in the coming weeks!
