Tasty Tuesday–The Final Christmas Feast

We had Ryan’s birthday dinner a day early today, so we got to have one last 12 Days of Christmas feast! Homemade fish tacos with shredded cabbage and a delicious white sauce, with a chocolate cake for dessert:

I’m always sad to see Christmas go, but at least we had one last chance to celebrate!

Ten!

I’m finding it a little hard to believe, but Moose is now 10 years old!

He was ready to open his presents as soon as he got home from school. He was very excited to received some new Lego sets!

He decided he wanted something different for dessert this year, so I made him a birthday trifle:

The trick candles were a huge hit! Chickadee was at the ready, in case he needed help:

Happy birthday Moose!

Happy Birthday Seamus McDaniel’s!

Today, Seamus McDaniel’s, our family’s favorite restaurant, and home of the best burger in St. Louis, is celebrating their 30th birthday. The mayor even declared it Seamus McDaniel’s Day in St. Louis! And even though it’s Sunday, a day they’re normally closed, they had a big party…”Cheers and Beers to 30 Years!” Of course I had to stop by with Chickadee while the rest of the children were at choir practice and have a pint:

It’s hard to believe, but Ryan and I have been eating there for almost half of those 30 years. I’ll never forget how awesome it was to live within walking distance when we were first married and new St. Louis residents. We’ve been to Seamus more times than I can count over the years, but here are a few of my favorite recent Seamus memories:

This is a bittersweet celebration, of course, because Jim wasn’t able to attend. But his memory and hard work building this establishment with his wife are always evident, and his spirit lives on in his family…I just wish he could have raised a glass to the next 30 years with all of the folks celebrating there today!

Celebrating a Monumental Milestone

Today the Gateway Arch, the tallest monument in the United States, celebrated its 50th birthday. I decided that this was the perfect opportunity for a field trip!

There was a band from Scott Air Force Base:

And a crowd of well-wishers:

A flag raising ceremony:

There were even (free!!!) cupcakes from a few cupcake trucks!

We spent a good deal of time walking around downtown, and admiring the view of the Arch:

But of course the main purpose for our visit was the “Journey to the Top,” which was only a dollar a person today, in honor of the original ticket price. Nothing beats that view!

We also received commemorative pins and certificates, to show we had been there on this historic day.

The Arch grounds are kind of a mess right now, but it’s going to look amazing when it’s done!

We had a great time looking at the metro area from every possible viewpoint!

Back on the ground, we had to get one last picture of St. Louis’ most famous landmark:

Happy Birthday Gateway Arch!

Arch Memories

The Gateway Arch is now officially 50 years old! Hard to believe, I know…it doesn’t look a day over 20! Even though we first “journeyed to the top” only last year (to coincide with St. Louis’ 250th birthday!), the Arch has dominated how we see St. Louis for the 14+ years we’ve lived here (and it was even partly responsible for the purchase of our home!). So, in honor of the big day, here are a few of my favorite Gateway Arch photos:

I think we’ve seen the Arch from pretty much every angle imaginable (including seeing its shadow on the ground when we were at the top!), and we’ve built our own replica more than one time at the St. Louis Science Center. No matter how we look at it, though, the Gateway Arch always means “home” to us!

Hoppy Bunny Day!

Today Bunny turned 11! The whole day was very fun, but there were a few highlights.

Opening presents is always a huge birthday hit:

We also had a birthday trip to the splash park:

And of course, a bunny cake!

In some ways, I can’t believe Bunny is already 11, because time moves so fast. On the other hand, she’s so very tall, and smart and mature, it’s a little hard to believe she’s only 11. But no matter how old she is, I love celebrating another year of life with my Bunny!

The Top Five–Things I Like About ME!

Happy birthday to me!

Version 2

Since today is my birthday, I thought I’d try something new…I’m going to make a “Top Five” list about the things I like about myself! I don’t do that too often…actually, I’m more likely to do the opposite, and find things I DON’T like about me, both privately and publicly, but I thought that just this once, because it’s “my day,” I’d focus on the things I actually like:

  • I’m willing to try new things–Whether it’s making a new recipe, finally getting my nose pierced two years ago (after over a decade of wanting to), dyeing my hair pink and purple to ring in the New Year this year, being on TV for the first time last month, or the fact that I’m going to try to learn to play the flute at age 36, I’m always up for trying something new!
  • I love to learn–I read a lot…that’s no surprise. But instead of simply reading for pleasure, a lot of what I read is an attempt to learn something, either because I need to (to teach the children), or because I want to. There are times when I wish I could get an advanced degree in something related to British history, but that’s just not happening. I’m willing to bet that I’ve researched as much, and know as much, as some people who have, though!
  • I’m fashionable–This may sound petty, but fashion is important to me. And I think I’m good at it. I have my own style and look, and I’m good at putting together outfits that are interesting and attractive, and use colors in unexpected ways, from clothing to accessories…or at least so it seems, based on the compliments I receive!
  • I’m unique–There are things about myself that I used to think I should be ashamed of, that I should hide and not admit to. But those are the very things that make me unique, so now I celebrate them. I love Old Time Radio comedies, and because I listen to them so much, my children love them, too! I also like sci-fi, Lego, 40s music, old movies, and vintage-styled clothing (see fashionable, above), and I don’t care who knows it!
  • I’m great at building traditions–Whether it’s things we do every year at Thanksgiving and Christmas (and there are a lot!), lesser-known holidays we celebrate annually (like Burns Night and Pi Day), festivals we attend every year (Art on the Square and the St. Louis Scottish Games are family favorites), or the traditions I’ve created with our family tea parties, I’m great at coming up with ways to make holidays and events both familiar and memorable, and always highly anticipated.

If I tried, I could probably come up with more things I like about me, but this is a start, and I think it’s a good way to celebrate my birthday!

Happy Birthday Ladybug!

Today was Ladybug’s eighth birthday! We had a fun, busy day!

We started out at the Missouri Botanical Garden, where we took the tram tour for the first time. I think we all learned a lot! We also stopped by the Ottoman Garden, where the birthday girl had to pose on the throne:

We then went to everybody’s favorite restaurant (Seamus McDaniel’s in Dogtown, in case that isn’t obvious), for lunch.

IMG_2807

Present time is always one of the birthday highlights, and this year was no exception. Ladybug received an American Girl doll that has been retired for almost two years!

IMG_2388

She requested a pony cake this year:

IMG_2401

I loved the look on her face when she realized that there were trick candles on her cake!

She did succeed in extinguishing all of them (eventually):

Happy Birthday Ladybug!

Look Who’s Three!

Today was Chickadee’s third birthday. It was a bit of a Frozen-themed day…her siblings pooled their money to buy her an Anna doll, with matching toddler-sized dress. And since that was on sale, they got her a matching crown, as well! I love how generous they are. She also received her very own Bitty Baby, and some clothes and a tea set to go with her. The tea set was a huge hit, but Bitty Baby herself got a bit lost in all of the Anna excitement.

We kept the Frozen theme going for dessert. I couldn’t find a Frozen pan, so we went with a cupcake tower instead, which was a first for us. Chickadee loved it!

It was a beautiful day, and a great birthday celebration!

Almost a Teenager!

Today is Turkey’s 12th birthday. That means in just one short year, we’re going to have a teenager in the house! It’s hard to believe how fast time goes by!

I think he had a nice day. We watched some movies, he received (and built) some new Lego sets, and he had his favorite birthday dinner of stromboli, with a triple chocolate poke cake for dessert. Yes, a nice day, indeed! Happy birthday Turkey!
