A Ballpark Style Feast for Opening Day

Today was Opening Day, not just for the Cardinals, but for all of Major League Baseball. No, the Cards didn’t play at home, and no, they didn’t win, but that didn’t stop us from enjoying our traditional Opening Day feast that Ryan started several years ago!

We had all your traditional ballpark foods: hot dogs (with a variety of toppings, including my homemade chili), brats (I like mine with sauerkraut and spicy mustard), nachos, and Super pretzels. We even had sundae cups for dessert!

And, as always, I took a picture of the children in their favorite Cardinals gear:

After waiting (rather impatiently) all winter, it’s hard to believe another Opening Day has come and gone all ready. I’m just hoping this first game wasn’t a harbinger of things to come for the Cards, and they have another great season!

Opening Day 2015

The Cardinals may have lost their home opener, but that doesn’t mean we didn’t enjoy Opening Day!

I always take a picture of the children on Opening Day, usually in our home. We were at the Botanical Garden this morning, however, and saw a patch of Cardinals-colored tulips. That seemed like the perfect backdrop for this year’s photo!

We had our traditional Opening Day dinner of ballpark food…hot dogs, brats, and my favorite, nachos!

For dessert, we had a not-quite-Cardinal-red layered pudding cheesecake:

The game may not have turned out like we wanted it to, but at least it didn’t rain this year!

Opening Day

We didn’t make it to Busch Stadium for the Cardinals home opener today, (although not for lack of trying!), but we did enjoy our traditional Opening Day dinner of ballpark foods!

We had hot dogs of many kinds, besides the ubiquitous plain dog. Chili dogs…

Chicago-style…

Even a replica of the Busch Stadium bacon-wrapped dog!

We also had brats…I like mine with grilled onions and spicy mustard!

There were nachos, of course, with a wide variety of toppings to choose from…

Beverages included beer and root beer, depending on age and preference. For dessert, we had the ice cream cups we remembered from our childhoods, minus the tiny wooden “spoons.” We also had Super Pretzels in the freezer, and cheese sauce and mustard for dipping, but they were forgotten in favor of the nachos. I’m sure the children will take care of those tomorrow!

We might not have been at Busch Stadium today, but it sure tasted like we were there!

The Markel Opening Day Foodstravaganza

My husband created an awesome new family tradition. Read on (make sure to click the link to get full details and photos!) to see how we plan on spending future Cardinals Opening Days, unless, of course, we’re lucky enough to actually spend one at the ballpark someday!

“The Cards blew it on Opening Day, but that doesn’t mean we didn’t have a great time, and I think we’ve just established a new tradition here at the Markel household. There’s no possible way I was going to be able to get tickets for all six of us to go, so we had to be creative and figure out a way to have some fun while staying home during the game.

The first step is to act like a real St. Louisan and immerse yourself in the game and the festivities which surround it as early in the day as possible. This means turning on the news, because every TV stations’ news crews here were all down at the ballpark where they belong. If you want to do something heinous in St. Louis and escape media attention, Opening Day is a pretty good choice in terms of timing. A good high speed chase or even a political scandal would be a good choice.”
