Last year, I ordered a fun, whimsical apron from Rare Dirndl to change up the look of one of my dirndls for Christmas. I’ve added a second special apron to my wardrobe, but instead of being bright and fun, this one is glamorous and elegant, words I didn’t know could be used to describe an apron!
Here’s a close-up of the beautiful beading…it really sparkles in the sunlight!
When I first saw this apron, I thought that it wouldn’t go with anything in my wardrobe…until I thought about the color scheme of “Die Heimat,” which is the perfect backdrop for this stunning separate!
I love having a way to really dress up one of my dirndls!
We started this school week with a field trip to the St. Louis Zoo! This is basically a spring tradition (except in 2020, which we don’t talk about), and I really look forward to this particular zoo trip every year!
We were fortunate to get see a fairly young Somali Wild Ass with her mother while we were there…she’s so cute!
While we were in Forest Park, we also stopped to see the tulips on Art Hill, which is one of my favorite spring scenes in St. Louis!
Ladybug learned about trigonometric functions in geometry. She read about the different classes of arthropods in biology. After completing the play last week, we finished our discussion of Henry V…she just has to complete her final paper on the book. In history, she read about Julius Caesar, Caesar Augustus, and Tiberius. We discussed the Analects of Confucius in her study of religious texts. She learned about the asteroid belt and the different types of asteroids in astronomy.
Chickadee created line, bar, and pictographs in math. She learned how to diagram interjections in grammar. We read about jellyfish and sea anemones in science. She learned about Texas and Oklahoma in geography. We started reading a book about the White House…we probably won’t get to go on a tour on our trip this summer, but I figure we might see it from the outside, so she should know something about it!
Chickadee and I have been enjoying baking recipes from the My Little Pony Baking Book she received for Christmas. We’ve made at least one recipe from each chapter of the book at this point…here’s a look at everything we’ve tried so far:
Strawberry Cupcakes
Celebration Cinnamon Rolls
Piñata Cupcakes
Pony Poke Cake
Chocolate Dream Pie
Cupcake Cones
Peanut Butter Candy Cookies
Out-of-this-World Brownies
Chaos Cookies
Frosted Sugar Cookie Bars
Apple Fritter Bread
Purple Velvet Cake
The recipes in the book are delicious, but they’re also a lot of fun, and they all look amazing…we’re really looking forward to baking more of them!
I went to try on my old faithful swimsuit…it’s been a few years, and I wanted to make sure it looked ok with the coverup I bought on clearance a while back. I assumed that it would fit like it always has, so you can imagine my surprise when I put it on and discovered that it in fact, did not fit, not even a little bit.
I think most people will agree that shopping for a swimsuit is not their favorite activity. I know that I think it’s a fate worse than shoe shopping, which I really, really hate. And apparently, if you “wait” to start shopping for a swimsuit until April, you may already be too late, because the sizes or colors or styles you want are already sold out.
I have to admit, I was really attached to this swimsuit. I have happy memories of wearing it on vacation to Pheasant Run (now closed), and Cabana Bay (where I was planning on wearing it this summer), and to the YMCA when I was a chaperone for choir camp. Not only that, but this was the first swimsuit I ever owned that I actually liked and felt really good in. I didn’t mind putting it on, which was a first for me…I felt really comfortable in it. Sadly, I don’t even have any pictures of it on, because as much as I loved it, I was still a little too self-conscious to allow a camera near me when I was wearing it.
I’ve ordered a new suit. It’s a similar style to my old one, but it’s not the same, because nothing could be. I’m really hoping it fits, because it was the only thing I found that I liked that was in remotely the right size and color palette I was looking for. Hopefully, it will be just as perfect, and I’ll get to make lots of new memories in it, and maybe even take some pictures while wearing it, but I’ll always miss my old, faithful, friend!
I’ve already shared my experiences with shopping for unique and beautiful dirndls with Rare Dirndl…now it’s time for a look at something a little more subtle from their shop, but still a form of National Dress that reflects my heritage!
Rare Dirndl offers an “Everyday Dirndl,” which has the same great structure and design as all of their dresses, but in a a solid color palette, where the apron matches the dress. There are also no hooks or ribbons on the front of the dress (although there is an option to add those for an additional fee), so at first glance, anyone who sees you out and about in your dirndl will think it’s a simple sundress…perfect for the first-time dirndl wearer!
I kept my accessories simple for this look, with some Homes Bracelets and a RockLove Nightmare Before Christmas necklace.
Oh, and my Docs, which are the perfect footwear for this dress!
I clearly have no qualms about wearing a full dirndl in public, but I had to get this more simple one because it’s my very favorite color, Pantone’s Color of the Year, periwinkle. The Everyday Dirndl is also available in a multitude of other colors, too, which vary by season.
Because the Everyday Dirndl is made in an easy-to-care-for fabric, you don’t have to worry as much about getting it dirty, since you can throw it in the washing machine!
The Everyday Dirndl is a made-to-order item, which means you have to be patient while it’s created, but that also means that it’s customizable which makes it feel even more one-of-a-kind! I’m looking forward to seeing what colors are available in the future, because you never know when you just need to add another dirndl to your closet!
After a long weekend for Easter, we got back to work on Tuesday…it’s so difficult when Easter is late and we’re so close to the end!
Ladybug worked with translation, reflection, dilation, and rotation on graphs in geometry. In history, she read about Antioches IV Epiphanes and Judas Maccabeus. She started the first of two chapters on invertebrates in biology. We finished reading Henry V. In her study of religious texts, she learned about the Quran.
Chickadee started converting measurements within the metric system in math. We continued reading the White Stallion of Lipizza. She started learning about cnidarians in science. In grammar, she learned how to diagram adverbs that describe adjectives or other adverbs. We read about the resurrection story in her Bible overview, as well as the stories that take place immediately after the resurrection.
I also worked on a little project during school this week. No, it’s not a countdown to the last day of school…it’s a countdown to when we leave for our (postponed) family vacation!
Speaking of countdowns, there are only 14 days of school left!!!
Chickadee spent some time making herself a flower crown (possibly inspired by the one I wore for Easter), and I love how bright and colorful and perfect for spring it is!
