This is going to be a very busy week, so it may take me a few days to write up our field trip to the Cardinals Hall of Fame and Museum, and the Busch Stadium Tour. In the meantime, here’s a picture of the children enjoying one of the highlights of the day: sitting in the Cardinals dugout!
In my experience, most toddlers are intimidated by mascots or other large, costumed characters…if they’re not flat-out terrified by them! Not Chickadee, though, at least not where Fredbird’s concerned. She runs right into his…wings?
Not only did she run to Fredbird, and happily receive a beaking, she actually cried when he walked away, and tried to follow him. She really may be the biggest Cardinals fan in the family!
Fredbird and Facebook Friday finally came to Belleville and the AT&T Store!
Of course we had to stop by and say “hi!”
In addition to a pair of Cardinals tickets (yay!), the children also got a “Flat Freddy” while we were there, which they were really excited about, because when we went to pick some up earlier in the month, the AT&T Store was all out.
This time was extra fun because Moose was able to come with us (even if he was hiding behind his “Flat Freddy” in the picture). Maybe someday, Fredbird will even be at a time and place where Ryan can join us, too!
Yes, the Cards lost, but it was a good game, up until the end of the top of the ninth inning, and it was a beautiful day to be at Busch Stadium. The temperature was perfect, there was a slight breeze, and it was bright and sunny. Oh, and Jaime Garcia made his much-anticipated return to the mound after a year and a day! I can’t think of a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon (High Sock Sunday!) with my family!
Moose and I had tickets to the Cards game tonight, but thanks to rain, rain, and more rain, the game was cancelled. As we walked up to the gate. This was our only view of Busch Stadium:
I’m not sad that I’m not going to be sitting out in the cold and getting wet, but I am sad that Moose and I didn’t get to have our special night out. I guess we’ll just have to wait until the make-up game in August for our fun trip to the game!
Fredbird finally had a “Facebook Friday” appearance in the Metro East, at a place (Fantasy Books and Games in Fairview Heights), and time that worked for me, so of course I took the children (minus Moose, unfortunately, who was still in school), to see him!
There’s nothing like watching Fredbird put on a show…unless it’s getting a free pair of field-level tickets to see the Cardinals play the Cubs next month! And since Moose missed out on seeing Fredbird, we decided that he should go. None of us have seen the Cards play the Cubs at Busch Stadium, so it should be a fun game!
For the first time this year, our children got to join the Cardinals Kids Club. To be fair, they received free memberships at an event out in Chesterfield…paying $30 for each child would be quite a financial commitment! On the other hand, I think the price is well worth it, given what you get!
We got the Starter Kits on Tuesday, and in them came the ID card, a voucher for two free tickets to a future game, and a coupon book with coupons for things like a free session at the Busch Stadium batting cage, bogo Stadium Tour tickets, and buy a dozen Krispy Kreme donuts, get a dozen free.
The boxes came today, and all of the membership “swag” was included in those: A Matt Carpenter bobble head, a lanyard with a membership pin, a rope bracelet, a backpack, and a pair of “binoculars.”
The children are very happy with their memberships, and I think we just may be convinced to shell out the money for them next year!
This was a super busy week of school! We’re starting to wrap up our Lent activities…we’re almost finished with The Jesus Tree and Amon’s Adventure. We memorized the hymn “All Glory, Laud, and Honor,” this week, in preparation of Palm Sunday. I can’t believe next week is Holy Week!
Turkey and Bunny kept working on fractions in math, but we also added decimals, to the tenths and hundredths place. I think we were all glad to look at something that wasn’t a fraction! Ladybug has been working on adding three-digit numbers, as well as liquid measurements.
In history, we learned about the beginning of Christianity. This fit in nicely with the approach of Holy Week…in addition to our Story of the World reading, we also read Paul Maier’s books: The Very First Christmas, The Very First Easter, and The Very First Christians. We’ll be learning more about ancient Rome next week.
We finished our science curriculum, learning about space travel and the International Space Station. We also got out the telescope to look at the Opposition of Mars this week…it was beautiful! Next week, we’ll be starting our botany curriculum that I had planned for next year, and get as far as we can in it before the end of the school year.
We’ll also be finishing The Bronze Bow next week. It has also tied in nicely to the approach of Holy Week. This week’s chapters really gave us some good opportunities for discussion…it really is a fantastic book!
In Scottish history, we finished the sad tale of Mary Queen of Scots. I’m looking forward to reading about James VI/I next. We also built the Brave Lego set I had purchased to go along with our Scottish studies…the children really like it!
We’ve also been learning a lot about the history of St. Louis. To celebrate the 250th birthday of the city, there is a public art project/scavenger hunt/history lesson spread out over the region. We’ve found almost 100 of the cakes so far, and we’ve learned a lot of things about this area that we didn’t already know!
We also went on a field trip this week. The science part ended up being kind of a bust, which didn’t really matter, because we had learned all about the weather elements they were discussing. We had a fun time at the baseball game, though, even though our Cardinals lost.
Hopefully, next week will be a little less chaotic. We’ll be taking the day off on Good Friday, at least, but we still have plenty of work to do before then!
Today, we took Moose out of school so we could take all of the children down to Busch Stadium for a field trip…the “Weather Bash at Busch.”
The weather bash itself was a little disappointing. We couldn’t really hear what any of the presenters were saying, and the part we were most excited about, the launching of a weather balloon, didn’t quite go according to plan. It launched, but way before it was supposed to…all of the sudden, it was just floating away! At least we got to see it take flight, and we also got to see Fredbird’s disappointment that he had missed it. There were some other cool demonstrations, but since we couldn’t hear what was being said, it was a little hard to tell what they were doing.
The weather bash was followed by a Cardinals game, though, which is always fun (even if the Cardinals did lose). It was especially fun to be there for part of the Opening Series! We sat in a section that we’d never been in before (right in front of the huge Hardee’s sign), and we really liked the seats. We’ll be keeping them in mind for the future!
It wasn’t quite the field trip I was expecting, but it was still fun, and a beautiful day to be at the ballpark to boot!
