Summer 2025
Hit the Bricks
Yesterday was my birthday, and as always, I wanted to see something interesting and beautiful, and I wanted to learn something, so we “Hit the Bricks” in St. Charles, MO!

Last year, I saw that Historic Main Street in St. Charles was offering history walking tours, but I never got around to taking one. I didn’t want to let the opportunity to pass again this summer, and I knew that this would be the perfect birthday activity. They offer two tours focusing on different ends of Main Street; I decided on the “MO Than Meets the Eye: Surprises of the First State Capital” tour which covers the 300 South-300 North blocks of Main in the span of just over an hour. The tickets were $7 per person, which means our whole family was able to attend for under $50, and that’s an accomplishment! We had a great tour guide, Lisa, who was also a familiar face from Legends and Lanterns and Christmas Traditions. She did a great job of making local history come alive for us!

Possibly the coolest feature of the tour was the fact that we were each given a ViewMaster so we could look at historic photos of the locations we were walking past…it was fascinating to see what has changed, and what really hasn’t!

We learned so many things on the tour…there are local connections to Disney, a North American Saint buried not too far from Main Street, contributions to the war effort during WWII, and stories of free speech and resistance. We also learned architectural details about some of the buildings…below is a place we’ve walked past countless times, and yet I didn’t know until yesterday that it’s actually a two-story log cabin that has been covered over in clapboard!

Another place we’ve walked past, and also stopped at for character interactions and performances during the festivals looks lovely and peaceful, but was originally the location of the town gallows!

We learned about different businesses that previously lined Main Street, buildings that were destroyed and rebuilt (and in some cases, destroyed and rebuilt again), and how the area’s complicated history came into play during the Civil War. There were so many other stories, too, but I won’t spoil the full tour…you’ll have to hear them for yourself!

There’s another daytime tour, “The Key to the West: Pioneers, Explorers, & Traders…Oh My!” that I’m hoping to go on in the future, and they’ve also recently introduced an evening tour that focuses on the macabre history of Main Street which also sounds really interesting. I love how we continue to find new events that are both fun and educational in St. Charles!
Paris in Chicago
Parade Scenes
It there’s one thing besides Art on the Square that Belleville does well, it’s parades…I’ve heard that we’re the “Paradingiest city in America!” We’ve attended many over the years, almost always to see Moose play in a marching band. This year, he decided he wanted to go to the Shriner’s parade and see what it was like to watch it, so even though he wasn’t required to be there, we went Friday night, and as always, it was a good time!

Reflection by the Lake
Tulip Time on Michigan Avenue
Since Memorial Day landed pretty early on the calendar this year, Combo Breaker was also earlier than usual, which meant that we were able to catch the tail end of tulip time on Michigan Avenue in Chicago. Yes, they were largely faded, but we still got to see some flowers as well as the tulip sculptures that herald the spring season on the Magnificent Mile.

Maybe someday I’ll see them at the height of their bloom!
Markel Family Combo Breaker 2025 Getaway–Day Seven
We took our time getting ready to leave for home last Monday morning, but at last it was time to say goodbye to the Renaissance and Combo Breaker 2025. We drove through Chicago on the way out so we could see the city one last time:

And then stopped at Rainbow Cone, as has become a tradition.

We took a break at Wally’s again:

And stopped for a late lunch/early dinner at Portillo’s…bet you thought I was sick of Italian beef after serving so many sandwiches at the event, but no, I was not!

And then it was on to home, with memories of Combo Breaker 2025 fresh in our minds and an eye toward Combo Breaker 2026!
Markel Family Combo Breaker 2025 Getaway–Day Six
By the time the third day of Combo Breaker rolled around, we had finally learned how to set up all of our kitchen appliances so as not to trip any circuits, which meant all of the coffee was actually ready on time!

We finally got away from the staff lounge long enough to check out the arcade next door, and I even had the chance to play a quick game of pinball.

After going through something like 140 pizzas for dinner, we made it back down for the grand final of the last game of the event…Street Fighter VI:

After the staff raffle (Chickadee was one of the winners) we finally got around to getting a family photo:

We all received medals for our hard work…they mean more to us than I can explain!

We were up super late, but at that point, we were so exhausted we didn’t even care. We did still have the drive home to think about in the morning, though!
Markel Family Combo Breaker 2025 Getaway–Day Five
We were up bright and early again for the second day of Combo Breaker.

The three days of the event have a very specific routine for those of us in the staff lounge…we serve breakfast, make sure there’s lots of snacks and water, serve lunch, put out more snacks and water, and serve dinner, plus even more snacks and water. Oh, and lots of cleaning up in between. This year, we tried out a new deli (Finuccio & Sons) for our lunch order, and we were very pleased with the sandwiches they provided!

We did take one brief walk through the event again…it’s easy to feel detached from what’s going on when you spend all day in the same room!

Up next…the final day of the event!
Markel Family Combo Breaker 2025 Getaway–Day Four
Last Friday was the first day of Combo Breaker competition. The theme was “10 Years of Dedication” celebrating the 10th anniversary of the event, and if I did the math right, we’ve been there for all but one!
Chickadee and I stopped by the main hall before breakfast to see the complete setup before it got crazy:

Chickadee faithfully kept the water and snacks for the volunteers stocked all weekend…and helped us with the meal service, too!

We did get a chance to take a break from the staff lounge to check out the action…it was crazy busy all weekend!
The most-anticipated meal of the event is always Portillo’s Italian beef on Friday night…we served hundreds of sandwiches to all kinds of staff and volunteers, and we didn’t even run out!

The clean-up from that meal is an absolute beast, and I think we were all relieved when it was time to go back to our rooms for the night!
Up next…day two of Combo Breaker!
