Early Spring Flowers

A trip to the Missouri Botanical Garden is evidence that spring is on the way here in St. Louis!

I love all these beautiful, early flowers. They’re so full of hope and promise. I can’t wait to see what’s in bloom next!

A March Morning at the Zoo

We spent a long morning at the St. Louis Zoo today. We got to see a lot of active animals (hello black rhino!), and it was a beautiful day to be out!

Of course, no trip to the zoo is complete without a visit to our favorite baby orangutan!

The zoo has changed how the Zooline Railroad works, and we rode it A LOT. Aside from the fact that it was fun to ride as much as we wanted, and get on an off as much as we wanted, it’s the first time we’ve been to the zoo as a family and ridden the train in years. This used to be a huge problem for Moose, but after a school field trip, he decided he likes it after all. It was so much fun to see him enjoy it, and to all get to enjoy the ride together!

2015-16 School Year–Weeks Twenty and Twenty-One

The last two weeks have been insanely busy! I think that’s going to be the norm from now until the end of the school year…

In math, Turkey and Bunny are still being immersed in geometry. They’ve been working on so many things that I don’t remember studying until high school…I can’t tell you how much that scares me! Ladybug has been working with equivalent fractions, which seems tame compared to the junior high math I’ve been teaching…it’s the little things that make you thankful!

While Ladybug continues to work her way through Charlotte’s Web, Turkey and Bunny have finally finished The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. No is sadder than I am that the book ended! I can’t believe I never read it before, but I kind of wish it could have kept going forever! Next week, we start on The Trojan War.

In history, we’ve learned about Catherine the Great, the creation of the cotton gin, standardization, and opium trade in China. We’re going to be learning about Napoleon soon, which I’m looking forward to!

Ladybug has been learning about bats in science. While I understand how important they are, they completely freak me out. While the children really like them (and even think they’re cute?!?), I’ll be glad to move on! Turkey and Bunny have been comparing and contrasting uniformitarianism and catastrophism…they have a test on these topics next week.

We had a fun time celebrating Leap Day this week. We made origami frogs, which was a new activity, and much more challenging than I was expecting, and we played leapfrog, which is always fun.

We have another two weeks of school (I think), and then it’s time for spring break!

Chickadee Thursday

Hanging out in Daddy’s new office, listening to the first Cardinals spring training radio broadcast…Chickadee is so happy baseball is back!

Pardon the messy hair…Chickadee had a MAJOR trauma yesterday when she ran right into a kitchen cabinet. Heads bleed a lot, and while I washed her hair right after it happened, I haven’t been able to wash it again after several doses of antibiotic ointment, which doesn’t make a great styling aid…way too sticky! Fortunately, it’s healing quickly, and I’m very grateful the gash wasn’t big enough to require a trip to the E.R. last night!

Brite Way

I couldn’t possibly determine how many times I’ve driven down West Main in Belleville over the years, but it’s a lot. And yet, I somehow never noticed this cool, retro sign at Brite Way Cleaners until this winter:

I don’t know if it lights up at night or not, but it sure looks cool during the day!
