Sartorial Saturday…On a Sunday–2023 in Outfits

Time for a look back at all of the significant outfits I wore in 2023! I only included looks with purpose, so my super casual grocery shopping outfits, for example, won’t be seen here. But it was a busy year, with a decent amount of travel and special events, so I had a lot of reasons to “dress up,” including a few days with multiple outfits. You’ll see my favorite brands well-represented…Miss Candyfloss and Rare Dirndl for clothes, and Splendette and Erstwilder for accessories. There are also a few “cute casual” outfits sprinkled throughout on days I didn’t feel like wearing a dress or it wasn’t appropriate for the occasion. And there are also a few rare “Sartorial Saturday” looks that I photographed just for fun (like my Daisy Duck Disney Bound), that I didn’t wear anywhere in particular…but most are outfits that really went somewhere!

It was a lot of fun to put this gallery together, and it also helped me keep track of what I’ve been wearing…I think I wore everything in my wardrobe at least once during the course of the year, and you can definitely tell what my favorite pieces are, because they’re on repeat!

Sartorial Saturday–Revisiting the 90s

I don’t always wear retro clothes…sometimes I want to go more casual. And when I do, I often look like it’s still the 90s (so still retro, I guess, and now I feel old)! I have always loved super wide-leg jeans, and I’m really excited that they’re “in” again (this pair is from Lane Bryant, and they’re perfect)! I know, I know…they say if you wore a trend the first time around, you shouldn’t repeat it, but I am (obviously) not one to care about fashion rules!

Just because I go more casual from time to time doesn’t mean I don’t accessorize when I do. And what says 90s more than a bucket hat? I also added a stack of Homes Bracelets (that represent where I was in the 90s), and a RockLove Jewelry necklace from one of my favorite childhood Disney movies…The Little Mermaid.

I added a Disney tank and hoodie to complete the look…I love the color combination!

Sartorial Saturday…On a Sunday–Easter Dressing

Here’s a look at this year’s Easter outfit:

I wanted to wear the classic 1950s harlequin print Long Jun skirt I got on sale from Pinup Girl Clothing after Christmas, so I started looking for a new pink top to wear with it. I looked…and I looked…and I looked some more. Pink tops that work with a retro look are apparently hard to come by. I finally found one at Lane Bryant, and I think it goes perfectly, especially with the fluttery sleeves.

Of course accessories are a must. I’ve been wearing the same Easter hat for years, so I got a new headpiece. Yes, it’s technically a fascinator, but it’s big enough that I think it’s hat-like. I added my favorite necklace and brooch, a springy bangle stack from Splendette, and, for the very first time, gloves! I’ve wanted Easter gloves for pretty much my entire life, so I’m very excited about this addition to the outfit!

I have now worn high heels for the first time since I broke my ankle in November, but it wasn’t what I would call a comfortable experience (although, are they ever, really?), so I went with my favorite sandals to finish off the outfit:

I really love how soft and springlike this whole look is!

How do you dress for Easter?

I’m No Angel

Lane Bryant has a new campaign right now…not just an ad campaign, I don’t think, but a full-on fashion industry movement. It’s called “I’m No Angel,” and it’s an obvious backlash to the constant barrage of “perfect” Victoria’s Secret models being held up as an example of what women should aspire to.

I think Lane Bryant’s new campaign, from the title to the pictures that go along with it, is genius. How many women can ever hope to look like a Victoria’s Secret model? What kind of message are we sending to our girls when they see the ads and the fashion shows illustrating to them what they’re “supposed” to look like?

I say, enough is enough. We need a more realistic look at beauty and human bodies in this country, especially in the fashion industry. So I’m totally on board with Lane Bryant, and I will proudly proclaim that “I’m No Angel!”

Fashion Fail

I’ve come to the conclusion that popular fashion and I just aren’t going to be getting along this year. The summer stuff was frightening (holy neon colors, Batman!), and while I had high hopes for fall, it’s really looking no better. When when you call this “elegant”…

OK, first of all…they call it a “cotton top,” which makes it sound somewhat respectable, if not plain, but let’s face it, it’s just a hoodie. Embellished, perhaps, but still, a hoodie. A shapeless, colorless, boring old hoodie. Sweatshirt of college champions…or just sleep-deprived college students. Hoodies are not stylish or interesting, they’re workout wear, or something you put on when you’re desperately cold or sick and don’t care how you look. And the kangaroo pouch on the front?  Unless you want to look pregnant when you’re not, probably not a great fashion choice.

Second, the outfit description says “jeggings,” which would be bad enough, but if you look closer, the item pictured, based on its actual description, is actually leggings, a questionable choice for a plus-size woman in the first place. Now, I’m sorry, but leggings are not meant to be worn with a shirt this short, (if they’re to be worn at all). Leggings belong under a full-on tunic, or, even better, a dress. Preferably on someone under the age of 12. But I digress.

My favorite part is the so-called “ballet flat,” though. Again, if you look closer at the actual product description, this is no ballet flat. No, it’s actually a “smoking slipper.” A slipper!

So, this allegedly “elegant” outfit that I’m supposed to wear on the streets of New York City (where the photos in the catalog were taken)? Yes, it’s just glorified jammies, from the cotton top and leggings, right on down to the slippers. It may be comfortable, but I’m completely missing the “style” in this outfit.  In a world where I see people at the school and the store in actual jammies, I guess this shouldn’t surprise me. And if people want to dress like this, it’s fine by me, but it shouldn’t be called fashion or style….it’s comfort wear. In an actual fashion shoot from a well-known company like Lane Bryant, however, I’ve come to expect something with actual style and interest, not something that looks like you just rolled out of bed.

Maybe the fashions for 2013 will be a little more tolerable…
