Taking Bobunk on the Road

It’s February, which means it’s time for our favorite made-up holiday, Bobunk! This year, we didn’t just celebrate with dinner out…we had a Bobunk trip to visit Bunny at college!

One of the things she was most excited to show us, and that I was most looking forward to seeing (other than her, of course!) was the college library. We started with a treat from the coffee shop just across the bridge into the main library, which also meant a stop by the historic basketball court, still in place following the building of the current stadium in the 60s:

The we visited the library proper. Nine floors…can you imagine?!? I couldn’t believe the sheer number of books, and I loved seeing all the cozy little study and collaborative spaces throughout the different floors!

The view from the top floor is as amazing as you’d imagine:

I always enjoy seeing the art installations around the campus:

And the lovely views in general:

We even ran into Big Red himself!

It wouldn’t be Bobunk without a special meal, so we went to one of Bunny’s favorite restaurant, Slim Chickens, which I really enjoyed. I tried the chicken and waffle, and the waffle was even heart-shaped!

And for dessert, we got Shamrock Shakes at McDonald’s:

It was a really fun weekend, and a great way to celebrate Bobunk!

Bobunk on Kirby Day

Last year, we celebrated Bobunk on Twosday, this year, we’re celebrating it on Kirby Day, because Kirby’s Return to Dreamland Deluxe was released on the Nintendo Switch today!

Ladybug made Kirby-inspired hot chocolate bombs, and today was the perfect chilly day to enjoy them!

I made the Kirby mocktail I invented last year…it looked really nice in our pink glasses!

For dinner, we did something new for Bobunk and got Super Gyros, which was delicious and made our house smell like Chicago:

For our Kirby Day dessert, I turned to the new Official Disney Parks Cookbook and made the Grand Californian’s Storytellers Cafe recipe for mini strawberry cheesecakes.

It was nice to have something fun to look forward to in the endless abyss that is February!

Twosday

Happy Twosday! We have been looking forward to Tuesday, 2-22-22, for months, and we made the most of the day!

Chickadee and I made a Twosday tutu:

We decided to honor this auspicious day by also celebrating our favorite made-up family holiday, Bobunk, which meant we got to have Beast Craft BBQ for dinner:

And, in addition to Twosday and Bobunk, it’s also George Washington’s Birthday, so we watched Hamilton. After we were done crying, Chickadee and I played a few hands of Dos:

To round out the day, I made “Twotti-Frutti cookies for dessert:

It wasn’t easy coming up with things that fit the Twosday theme, but I think I did a pretty good job!

Tasty Tuesday–Bobunk 2020

“Ah, the days of Bobunk…”

If you’ve watched the 1990s Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, you’ve probably heard of Bobunk, the holiday that Salem the cat erased. Since we don’t know anything about how Bobunk was celebrated (thanks Salem!), we decided to make it a special family holiday that used to be know as Seamus Day. I’m not going to belabor the point, but we realized this year that we weren’t really looking forward to it, and we decided that we should just let it go, and have happy memories of Seamus Days gone by, instead of forcing a celebration and possibly ruining our memories of the holiday.

But we still wanted a holiday. And then it occurred to me (and I really don’t know why it took this long!)…Bobunk should be a celebration of our favorite restaurant, Beast Craft BBQ! And Beast has the added bonus of now having two locations to choose from, (or we can just bring the food home which is what we did on Sunday).

I don’t think we’re going to have a fixed date for this holiday like we did with Seamus Day, although I do like the idea of observing it the weekend after Valentine’s Day as we did this year. I do know that whatever day Bobunk falls on, we’ll continue to have something to look forward to every February!

Tasty Tuesday–Seamus Day

I’ve shared the details of one of our family’s favorite holidays, Seamus Day, here in the past. Every year on February 26th, starting in 2014, we’ve grabbed a meal (either lunch or dinner), at our favorite local pub, Seamus McDaniel’s, in the Dogtown neighborhood of St. Louis. Well, this year, the 26th just didn’t work out, so we had our lunch out on Sunday, instead. But I still wanted to recognize Seamus Day, so here’s a look at what is still the best burger I’ve ever had!

I have to confess, I am a little worried about Seamus. They’ve made a lot of changes (including to the decor and the menu), and the prices took a big jump. For now, anyway, the food tastes as good, which is the most important thing. We’ll be keeping an eye on the situation, though…I want to be warned if the changes extend to the food itself!

Seamus Day

Last year, on February 26th, I said this:

After having eaten at Seamus McDaniel’s on February 26th for three straight years, due to varying circumstances, I was so sad last year thinking that our fairly new tradition would have to come to an end after 2/26/2016…and then later in 2016, Seamus announced that they would now be open on Sundays! So here we are, on February 26th, a Sunday, and Seamus was open for us to enjoy lunch this afternoon. We have now had lunch or dinner at Seamus McDaniel’s on February 26th in 2014, 2015, 2016, and thankfully, 2017, as well. After four years in a row, there is no doubt that “Seamus Day” on February 26th is a favorite family tradition!

I know I’ve said it before, but I think today’s burger was the best one I’ve had yet. I do know this…eating lunch at Seamus guarantees the most perfectly rare burger you can imagine!

Chickadee Thursday

We had a fun and busy day today, with a field trip to the LC-MS International Center, followed by lunch at our favorite restaurant, Seamus McDaniel’s. Definitely Chickadee’s idea of a good day!
