Sartorial Saturday–90s Flashback

“Mom, what were you like in the 90s?”

Last month’s viral trend really amused me, especially when I realized I could demonstrate exactly what I was like in the 90s without digging for an old photo…I just had to find the right items in my current wardrobe, and it wasn’t even hard!

This was a common look for me in the 90s…an oversized flannel over a fitted top, wide-leg jeans, and Dr. Martens Mary-Janes.

For accessories, I used tiny butterfly clips to pull my hair back and added a choker and big hoops. Even my lip color, a plummy brown Colourpop lip stain called “90s Babe,” fits the theme!

And I even have the perfect Loungefly, inspired by one of my very favorite 90s movies, Clueless:

It was really fun to pull together a (dare I say) retro look from youth with pieces from my current closet…I guess some things never change!

Sartorial Saturday–Transformation Transformed

I’ve worn this beautiful and vibrant skirt (with artwork of the Evil Queen’s transformation from beautiful & regal ruler to old hag), designed by Stephanie Buscema twice in the last week.

Except if you’ve been following me for a while, you might recognize this print from a dress I’ve had in my wardrobe for almost a decade.

While I love everything about the skirt (especially the bold color palette, not to mention its fantastic volume!), I have always hated the bodice of the dress. So this year, I decided that since I’m an adult, I’m allowed to transform a dress I dislike into a skirt I love.

Yes, I hacked off the bodice of the dress. And since I decided to do it kind of last minute ahead of Halloween, I just added some velcro where the zipper was. I may take it to a tailor and have an actual zipper put in eventually, but for now, this works just fine!

I accessorized with a RockLove Jewelry Nightmare Before Christmas necklace, an Erstwilder Love Potion brooch, and a stack of Splendette Duchess Bangles, all in shades of purple, and I wore my Colourpop Cosmetics Evil Queen lipstick and lipgloss, too.

I paired my “new” skirt with my favorite purple Frenchie top from Unique Vintage:

I absolutely love how this whole look came together!

I’m glad I took a chance on changing something in my wardrobe from something I didn’t love into something I really do!

The Top THREE–Cosmetics Companies

I’m known for extending my “Top Five” lists to include six items, but today I’m taking a look at the rare “Top Five” list that only has three items, because while I have a lot of brands in my vanity table, there are just three cosmetics companies that I absolutely love!

  • BĂ©same Cosmetics–This vintage-inspired brand offers products that are designed based on actual cosmetics products/colors from the 1920s through the early 1970s. They have also created collections inspired by influential women from that time period including Lucille Ball, and most recently, Ella Fitzgerald. I especially love their refillable powder compacts, and the different formulas of powders they offer, including setting, finishing, and illuminating varieties.
  • Colourpop Cosmetics–If I want fandom-based cosmetics, from Animal Crossing to Disney to Sailor Moon, this is where I turn. Aside from the cool theming, I love how pigmented and shimmery their eyeshadows are (especially the Super Shock Shadows), and I really love their lip lacquers…I just wish they’d make more of them!
  • Holo Taco–These are the prettiest nail polishes I’ve ever seen! The colors are vibrant, and there is so much shimmer in the holographic formula that it absolutely sparkles in the light. It also wears exceedingly well…I can go for much longer without chipping a nail with Holo Taco than I can with any other brand, and after over a full year of “Mani Mondays,” I’ve had a lot of experience!

Where are your favorite places to buy cosmetics?

Shadow Sunday

This is not the best eyeliner I’ve done, but I like the blending I got with the Colourpop Animal Crossing “Nook, Inc.” eyeshadow palette. It’s hard to tell in the picture, but the inner corner is a very sparkly shade of mint green!

Shadow Sunday

Today’s “Shadow Sunday” features the Colourpop Cosmetics “Glow Getter” shadow palette. I love that the colors in it are neutral, but with a good deal of sparkle!

Shadow Sunday

This week’s “Shadow Sunday” features three shades of Colourpop’s Super Shock Shadow: Shining Star, Fame Game, and Moon Daisy, plus the crème gel liner in Kicker.
